You can calculate your laptop battery life by dividing the battery capacity (Watt-hours, aka Whr) from the power consumption of your laptop (watts).

Calculate Battery Life


Watt-hours (Whr) / Watts = Battery Life (in hours)


Example: 60 Whr / 20 Watts = 3 hours

Calculate Watt-hours (Whr)


Whr = Volts x mAh / 1000


Example: 14.8 Volts x 4060 mAh / 1000 = 60.09 Whrs (rounded up)

Calculate Milli-Amp Hours


mAh = Whr x 1000 / Volts


Example: 60.09 x 1000 / 14.8 = 4060 mAh (rounded down)


How many watts does a laptop typically use?


Ultra-portable laptops with low voltage CPUs and integrated graphics use as low as 10 - 20 watts (or maybe lower during idle sessions) and up to 65 watts in high performance settings. 


Gaming laptops with high performance CPUs, dedicated GPUs, larger screen and/or high refresh rate screen may use up to 100 - 400 watts of power, especially when running intensive games or tasks. Therefore, gaming laptops are slightly more power hungry than an average laptop due to the power required to run intensive games or tasks. 


The power consumption depends on many factors, such as hardware components, software applications, screen size, and settings configuration.


Power consumption always increases with the increase in screen size, CPU and GPU utilisation, and the number of programs (don't forget to include background apps too) running. Therefore, giving a fixed figure for the laptop’s power consumption isn’t easy.
