What is BitLocker?

BitLocker is Microsoft's full-disk encryption feature built into Windows. It protects your data by encrypting entire drives. A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit numerical code (e.g., 123456-123456-123456-123456-123456-123456-123456-123456) that allows you to unlock and access an encrypted drive if:

  • You forget your PIN/password.
  • The TPM (Trusted Platform Module) detects hardware changes.
  • The system enters recovery mode due to failed authentication attempts.

  • You take the storage drive out and wish to read it from a different device.

This key is automatically generated when "Device Encryption" is enabled and is critical for data recovery.
